Lea started his professional career as a YTS player at Reading and the Woodley youngster proved such a prospect in the Youth ranks at Elm Park that he made his Reading League debut at the tender age of only 17 against Chester in 1991. He was a part of Readings 1993/94 Division Two Championship winning squad and won a winners medal when Reading won the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup in 1994. After only making 17 appearances for Reading, Lea joined Fulham in a £20,000 transfer deal in 1995. Unfortunately a series of injuries caused Lea to retire from the game in 1997.
